Meta has unveiled Muse Spark, its first AI model from a newly formed “superintelligence” team, marking a major step in its effort to compete with leading AI developers.

Meta introduced Muse Spark on 8 April as the inaugural release from its Superintelligence Labs, a unit created less than a year ago following a multibillion-dollar investment and recruitment drive led by chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.
The model represents the company’s first major AI release in roughly a year and is intended to re-establish Meta’s position in a sector dominated by competitors including OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.
According to Meta, Muse Spark has been designed as a “small and fast” system capable of reasoning through complex questions in fields such as science, mathematics and health.
The launch follows a $14.3bn investment in Scale AI and the hiring of its chief executive, Alexandr Wang, to lead the new division, alongside high compensation packages aimed at attracting top engineering talent.
Independent evaluations indicate that Muse Spark performs competitively with leading AI systems in areas such as language processing and visual understanding, though it remains behind in coding and certain forms of abstract reasoning.
The model tied for fourth place on a broad benchmarking index compiled by the evaluation firm Artificial Analysis, reflecting mixed performance across different technical categories.
Meta acknowledged limitations in early iterations of the system. Wang stated in social media posts that the model still has “rough edges” that will be improved over time.
Zuckerberg had previously indicated to investors that the initial models from the division would demonstrate progress rather than immediate dominance, emphasizing a trajectory of continued development.
Muse Spark is initially available through the Meta AI app and website, with broader deployment planned across the company’s platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, in the coming weeks.
The company also confirmed that the model will replace existing Llama-based systems powering chatbots across its services and smart glasses ecosystem.
Unlike previous Llama releases, which were made openly available, Meta is providing Muse Spark only through a “private preview” to selected partners, signalling a shift in distribution strategy.
Meta indicated that Muse Spark will support a range of consumer-facing tasks, including analysing images, answering complex queries and assisting with everyday activities such as planning travel or estimating nutritional information from photos.
A “Contemplating Mode” enables the system to run multiple AI agents simultaneously to enhance reasoning capabilities, allowing it to handle more complex tasks.
The company also outlined early monetisation plans, including integrating shopping features into its AI chatbot to direct users toward products within its ecosystem.
Meta said it aims to leverage its user base of more than 3.5 billion people by embedding AI tools into everyday digital interactions, positioning Muse Spark as a foundation for broader product integration across its services.
