OpenAI has acquired Technology Business Programming Network (TBPN), a fast-growing daily technology talk show, marking its first entry into media ownership as it seeks to expand how it communicates developments in artificial intelligence.

Strategic Shift Into Media

The acquisition, announced April 2, brings TBPN’s founders, John Coogan and Jordi Hays, and their team into OpenAI’s operations. The show, launched in 2024, has built a strong following in Silicon Valley through interviews with prominent technology executives and real-time discussion of industry developments.

OpenAI said the move is intended to strengthen its ability to communicate its mission and influence broader discussions about artificial intelligence. In a company message, OpenAI executive Fidji Simo stated that traditional corporate communications approaches are insufficient for a company driving significant technological change, emphasizing the need for a platform that facilitates ongoing, public dialogue around AI.

The company reportedly views the acquisition as a way to “help communicate its plans better and guide the conversation about the changes AI creates.”

Editorial Independence Maintained

OpenAI stated that TBPN will retain full editorial independence, including control over programming, guest selection, and editorial decisions. The company described this autonomy as essential to preserving the show’s credibility and audience trust.

TBPN will continue to operate under its existing format, broadcasting live daily and maintaining its established distribution across platforms such as YouTube, X, and podcast services.

The show will be integrated into OpenAI’s strategy organization and report to Chris Lehane, the company’s chief global affairs officer, while also contributing to broader communications and marketing initiatives.

Established Platform With Industry Reach

TBPN has gained prominence as a platform for candid discussions within the technology sector, regularly featuring high-profile guests including Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella, filmmaker James Cameron, and OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman.

The program broadcasts several hours of live content each weekday and has been described as a central venue for industry dialogue, covering developments across artificial intelligence, business, and technology.

The show developed a loyal following by providing interviews with senior executives and positioning itself as an alternative to established business media outlets.

Deal Context and Financial Terms

OpenAI did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition.

The move comes as the company continues to compete for enterprise customers in the artificial intelligence sector and adjusts its strategic priorities, including focusing on AI coding tools after shelving its Sora video-generation initiative.

OpenAI also noted that media ownership by technology companies has precedent, referencing historical examples such as NBC’s corporate structure and Microsoft’s involvement in MSNBC as part of its rationale for the acquisition.

The company indicated that TBPN’s existing capabilities in audience engagement and content distribution would be leveraged to enhance its broader communication efforts while preserving the show’s independent editorial voice.
