Sarvam, a Bengaluru-based artificial intelligence startup, released its Indus chat application on February 20, 2026, as a publicly accessible beta on iOS, Android, and the web. The app serves as a conversational interface for the company’s newly developed foundational models and is currently available primarily to users in India, where access may initially require joining a waitlist due to limited compute capacity.

Indus is designed to support text and spoken interactions and permits users to log in using a phone number, Google, Microsoft, or Apple ID. The interface allows users to input queries and receive responses in both text and audio formats. Early releases of the app include features such as multilingual support and voice input, reflecting Sarvam’s focus on diverse language engagement.

The launch follows Sarvam’s unveiling of its Sarvam-105B and Sarvam-30B large language models earlier in the week at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, where the company highlighted its enterprise initiatives and partnerships. The 105-billion-parameter model powering Indus is part of Sarvam’s broader strategy to build AI systems underpinned by locally trained technology.

Sarvam’s Indus entry arrives amid a fast-growing generative AI landscape in India, in which global players like OpenAI, Anthropic and Google maintain significant user bases. At the summit, OpenAI’s CEO reported that ChatGPT had more than 100 million weekly active users in India, and Anthropic stated that the country accounted for a notable share of Claude usage globally, highlighting the competitive environment for conversational AI platforms.

The company’s official communication describes Indus as an early release that will evolve with user feedback. Sarvam has indicated that the limited compute capacity may initially constrain access, and users may encounter a waitlist as the startup expands service availability.

Founded in 2023, Sarvam has secured $41 million in funding from investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Peak XV Partners, and Khosla Ventures as it develops language models tailored to Indian contexts. The Indus app’s deployment marks the startup’s first major consumer-facing AI product, extending the reach of its research and model development into a public application.

The Indus app includes capabilities beyond basic conversational exchange. These features include potential integration of AI agents designed to automate routine tasks, document drafting and editing tools, and support for file uploads such as images and PDFs, which the system can process and respond to.

The app supports multilingual interaction across India’s linguistic diversity, an attribute aligned with Sarvam’s emphasis on local language accessibility. Users can interact in languages including Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and others, with the system able to handle code-mixed queries involving multiple languages in a single conversation.

The broader release of Indus comes as India positions itself as an active participant in shaping AI adoption and infrastructure. At the same summit where Sarvam showcased its models, government and industry leaders discussed initiatives to implement AI tools across sectors and to build sovereign computing infrastructure.

Sarvam’s Indus app represents a significant step by an Indian startup toward consumer-oriented generative AI, reflecting both local technological development and the global AI market’s evolution.
